Why We Are in the Jewelry Business

Very early one morning several years ago, I received a regular call from a longtime client whom owned an upscale retail jewelry store. This particular morning, I asked him why he was working so early at his store. He explained that he arrived at the jewelry store every day at 6:30 a.m. and worked until 6 p.m. At this time, he was in his mid- to late seventies. I remarked that he should be living in a warm climate, relaxing on a beach. In response, he shared his philosophy, which has since become my own for why we work in one of the greatest industries in the world:

The jewelry business is a very unique business. There is no other job quite like working in a jewelry store. We have a rare job where our main purpose is to make people happy. Even a florist has to deal with funerals, but we sell happiness—for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, or just to say ‘I love you.’

For the last sixty years, I have come to work to meet with my clients, design beautiful pieces of jewelry for them, and then send them to you to make. When I present the finished product to my clients, I nearly always see tears of happiness. That is why I am in the jewelry business.
