Jewelers Mutual reminds businesses that taking precautionary measures can prevent fires and minimize losses resulting from fires. Tips include reviewing fire safety equipment and processes and familiarizing staff with safe practices and emergency procedures.
Jewelers Mutual recommends ensuring that your environment is equipped with the correct type and number of fire extinguishers, and that they are accessible and properly serviced by a reputable service contractor. If in question, the local fire department can verify the correct type, size, location, and number of extinguishers needed. Fire and smoke detection systems should be properly serviced and maintained to provide reliable early warning for occupants and local fire authorities. In addition to checking fire safety equipment, Jewelers Mutual recommends conducting regular (at least monthly) inspections of your business to identify potential hazards, and familiarizing staff with the location of fire extinguishers, fire alarm system components, hazardous products, and emergency procedures. You should also review proper handling and storage for flammable/combustible liquids and compressed gases with all employees. Jewelers Mutual suggests inviting your local fire department to conduct a walk-through of your facility so that they can provide recommendations to help prepare your staff to act appropriately in the event of an emergency.
